Description: Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) are fostering the appearance of a plethora of new services and applications. On the one hand, ICT will improve the efficiency of a variety of processes and will provide users with amazing amounts and varieties of services. On the other hand, the universal deployment of these new technologies and the world-wide access to them may lead to the invasion of users privacy. In this chapter, we introduce the reader to a number of relevant aspects of privacy in ICT.

Description: Mobile devices able to locate themselves such as mobile phones and PDAs are virtually everywhere, and they are expected to gain more importance in the near future. Their ability to determine locations opens the door to a new bunch of services: the so-called location-based services (LBS). The commercial sector will highly benefit from LBS. However, they are not without a cost - privacy. In this article we present a (trusted third party)-free, distributed, collaborative method to preserve the location privacy of LBS users.

Description: During the last decades, video surveillance systems (VSS) have become popular and, nowadays, they can be found almost everywhere. When those systems were initially deployed, they were mainly used by authorities only and, people tend to accept to be surveilled for the sake of security. Currently, VSS are located in public places and controlled by governmental agencies, but some others are placed in private spaces and controlled by corporations, banks, and so on. In addition, VSS have gained computational capabilities and, nowadays, off-the-shelf cameras are able to record high quality digital video that can be easily shared by means of private networks or even the Internet. Trust is strictly related to the operators of those VSS and their behaviour. Hence, it is necessary to define a comprehensive model for trustworthy video surveillance, aiming at preserving the right to privacy of citizens. In this article we present a platform for trustworthy video surveillance. Our model is based on the use of real-time and accurate techniques, and the active cooperation of people using mobile applications.

Description: Population pyramids have rapidly changed their shape worldwide. Specially in industrialised countries, where a steady ageing process is taking place. Due to the ageing of the population, age-related illnesses such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia are becoming commonplace and healthcare systems struggle to im- prove the quality of life of patients and carers. Wandering and disorientation are common symptoms amongst patients with MCI, and they could lead to fatal outcomes. In this position article we propose a wandering detection technique based on the analysis of randomness in patients’ trajectories, which are gathered by means of standard low-cost mobile phones with GPS.
