Description: Over the last years, the cognitive city paradigm has emerged as a promising solution to the challenges that megacities of the future will have to face. In this article, we provide a thorough review of the literature on Cognitive Cities. We put in place a clear and strict methodology that allows as to present a carefully curated set of articles that represent the foundations of the current understanding of the concept of cognitive city. Hence, this article is intended to serve as a reference for future studies in the field. We emphasise the ambiguities and overlapping meanings of the cognitive city term depending on the domain of study and the underlying philosophy. Also, we discuss some of the implications that cognitive cities might have on society pillars such as the healthcare sector, and we point out some of the main challenges for the adoption of the concept. Last but not least, we suggest some possible research lines that are to be pursued in the years to come.

Description: People suffering from mild cognitive impairments and early stages of dementia may notice a deterioration in their memory functions. Consequently, disorientation or wanderinglike behaviours might occur in their daily activities. Detecting wandering in trajectories is a complex task highly influenced by the technology/ies used and the context in which people move. Hence, there is no commonly accepted technique to detect wandering automatically. Since technology is a key factor, Smart Cities can open the door to new opportunities to approach the problem. In this article, we briefly summarise the state of the art of wandering detection techniques, we describe some of the benefits that Smart Cities will contribute with, and we provide a preliminary proposal of a new wandering detection method.

Description: The advent of Smart Cities is one of the greatest challenges and field of opportunities in the goal to achieve sustainable, comfortable, and socially responsible living environments. A large number of factors, spanning from government/administration/citizen interaction models, heterogeneous communication network, interoperability, or security determine the capabilities and functionalities that can be deployed. In this chapter, different factors in the implementation and adoption of E-Government within Smart City scenarios are described. The authors include the Interoperability Principle as a part of the Open Government concept and link this concept with the Smart Cities view. Then, they describe a new model of public organization that they call “Intelligent,” characterized by the “Smart Government,” and they propose a matrix with the elements of this model. Then, the authors analyze the technical and infrastructure dimensions of the matrix.
