Assessment of pain in newborns in neonatal ICUs with intelligent systems

Babies and especially, premature infants who must be admitted to a neonatal ICU, must often undergo care processes, whether invasive or non-invasive. These processes can cause discomfort or even pain. Nowadays, pain is given much importance, it is even considered a vital constant that must be taken care of. Although in the past it was believed that newborns did not suffer pain, as they did not have a sufficiently mature nervous system, today the scientific community believes that if the pain is not alleviated, it can have long-term consequences on the physical and mental health of the baby. With this project of the Rovira y Virgili University we want to develop an automatic and real-time measurement system for pain or discomfort. In addition to developing a registration and warning system in case of alarm or need for attention.
