Smart Techologies receives two Joan Pedrerol Gallego 2025 Awards

The Smart Technologies Research Group has been honoured with two Joan Pedrerol Gallego 2025 Awards for the Social Impact of Research, granted by the Social Council of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in the field of Experimental Sciences, Engineering, and Architecture. The awarded projects are "Agentive and contextual monitoring of ageing and intrinsic capacity with privacy preservation" (led by Dr. Agusti Solanas and Dr. Edgar Batista) and "Advances in open-source intelligence and AI tools to combat child sexual abuse material and human trafficking" (led by Dr. Fran Casino and Dr. Antoni Martínez-Ballesté). Smart Techologies participates in the launch forum of the Societat Longeva Catalunya Sud

The Smart Technologies research group is part of the Societat Longeva Catalunya Sud initiative, led by Dr. Jordi Cartanyà Solé and the Seniorlab laboratori ciutadà. The presentation of the initiative took place in Reus and was attended by professionals from the health and care sectors, as well as other researchers from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili. Research on the use of technology and, more specifically, on contextual and cognitive environments, can play a key role in improving the quality of life of older adults and promoting healthy, autonomous, and active ageing.


AI to anticipate ageing and improve quality of life

Our PhD student, Mary Carlota Bernal, uses artificial intelligence to predict the evolution of people's intrinsic capacity: their key physical and mental functions for autonomy and well-being. The goal is to help individuals make informed health decisions and adopt personalized preventive strategies, promoting a more active and high-quality ageing process, with particular impact in Spain and Latin America. Special session on CONDOR project at XL URSI National Symposium 2025

Our research group organised a special session within the XL URSI National Symposium held in Tarragona, where several works resulting from the CONDOR project were presented. The session showed advances in communications, signal processing, remote sensing, and security challenges in cognitive environments, highlighting the project's main contributions and collaborative outcomes. Numerical simulation pinpoints high‑risk zones for incisional hernias

Our interdisciplinary team developed a finite‑element simulation of the human abdominal wall to identify areas most susceptible to postoperative incisional hernias. Results confirmed that midline incisions incur the highest stress, supporting recommendations to favor transverse cuts. More details


New antivirus model detects evasive malware with 99% accuracy

Dr. Fran Casino, in collaboration with University of Piraeus, have developed a symbolic execution-based system that detects sophisticated malware that evades traditional sandbox tools. Tested on more than 14,000 samples, the model achieved nearly 99% detection accuracy, outperforming commercial solutions in speed, precision, and false positive reduction. More details Interview
